The term 'fat burner' is used to describe nutrition supplements that are claimed to acutely increase fat metabolism or energy expenditure, impair fat absorption, increase weight loss, increase fat oxidation during exercise, or somehow cause long-term adaptations that promote fat metabolism.

How they work

  • Caffeine
Stimulates the release of adrenaline, which increases metabolism and fat burning

  • L-carnitine
Transports fatty acids to the mitochondria, where they are oxidized for fuel

  • Protein
Enhances metabolism and suppresses appetite by reducing the hunger-stimulating hormone ghrelin

  • Soluble fiber
Helps control appetite and prevents the body from absorbing fat from food

Ingredients in fat burners

  • Green tea contains caffeine and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which have thermogenic effects

  • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a popular supplement that contains chemicals found in a fatty acid called linoleic acid

  • Yohimbine is a substance found in the bark of Pausinystalia yohimbe, a tree found in Central and Western Africa

  • Garcinia cambogia contains a natural fat-burning substance called hydroxycitric acid

Fat burner considerations

  • Some fat burner tablets can interfere with other medications

  • Caffeine has little to no clinical evidence on fat burning
